"We need creative players who
can play in unique ways more quickly and who can score."
- US Youth Soccer @ www.usyouthsoccer.org
US Youth Soccer is the largest sports organization
in the world @ 3.2 million registered members. Their dedicated
technical staff recently published a series of recommendations
detailing the methods and benefits of small-sided games.
The reports tap extensive research and decades of empirical
observation to help identify “what is needed”
to finally bring youth soccer development in the United
States on par with the rest of the world.
For many cultures around the world, soccer
reaches well beyond the playing fields. For those who know
soccer, “the beautiful game” is a global celebration;
a rich and colorful display of national spirit; even a way
of life for many. But perhaps more importantly, soccer is
a means to individual creativity, problem-solving and community.
Sounding a virtual invitation to raise the bar for the future
of US player development, US Youth Soccer echoes a few commonly
asked questions of aspiring US coaches and administrators:
- When do we allow [young soccer players]
to be creative?
- When do we allow them to try to solve
problems in unique ways?
- When do we allow them to experiment
and enjoy the game?
- When do we allow them the opportunity
to search for and learn new solutions, and to do so again
and again, thousands of times in thousands of situations?
